Why Volunteering Matters in Mental Health Charities
As we celebrate Volunteers’ Week this June, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible impact that volunteers have for organisations like First Steps ED as well as the individuals and communities they serve. Having been a volunteer blog writer for a few months now, and someone with lived experience of an eating disorder, I’ve come to truly appreciate just how powerful giving time and voice to a cause can be. It’s about creating change for others and fostering healing, purpose, and connection within yourself. Volunteering offers a chance to transform personal experiences into something meaningful, to speak out where silence once existed, and to support others in ways that are deeply human and impactful. It’s a reminder that every story shared, every hour given, and every effort made can ripple outward and make a real difference. :)
Volunteering in the mental health space from is all about creating hope. I feel like I am part of something bigger by working together to support those who might be struggling silently, just as I once was. For me, writing blogs has been a way to give back, to contribute to the conversation around eating disorders and recovery, spread hope and to remind others that they’re not alone.
Mental health charities like First Steps ED rely on volunteers in so many ways from peer support to creative projects to fundraising and awareness campaigns. Volunteers bring energy, compassion, and often lived experience. This is something that can’t be taught but can deeply connect with others.
In my personal journey, the community played a huge role in recovery. Knowing that people cared, that others understood made all the difference. As a volunteer, I am grateful to be part of a supportive network for someone else.
This Volunteers’ Week, I want to say thank you to everyone who gives their time to support mental health charities, and to the teams who make space for volunteers to be part of the mission. Your time matters. Your voice matters. And together, we’re making a difference.
If you’re thinking about volunteering, especially in a mental health setting, I’d really encourage you to explore it! You never know whose life you might touch or how much it might change yours in the process…
Salma :)
